If you are looking for a great place to hang out while in Rio you must visit Lapa. You can hang out in the streets drinking caipirinhas until the clubs get packed around 1 or 2 am. The stalls all serve cheap drinks and food. One thing I didn't know about the bars in this area is that you get a number when you walk in that acts as your bar tab number. When you leave you have to pay your tab based on what you ordered with your number. Don't loose your number and make suer you have enough cash to pay at the end. Be careful in this area because it is known for pic pocketing because of all the drunk people. This place is a must if you are looking for a great time in Rio!

Samba and Merengue til early hours... Very safe, buy all your Caipirinha at the small stalls where you'll make friends and can get advice of which bars will suit your music tastes. Best dancing and music in on the street though. Obviously, don't wear expensive watches etc and attract attention.

This is the nightlife area in Rio, pubs bars restaurants and nightclubs. Lapa arches are well known in Rio you can also find the multicolored stairs. You should watch out for the lonely alleys where hookers are and its not safe. On the arches used to be a small tram which is closed now for safety reasons. When they will open it again you will be able to have great views.

Full of restaurants, bars, places to dance and street parties this place is a must whet you talk about Rio's night life. I really can't say anymore about it, you have so much places to go that you just have to decide what to do, but it's for sure that you won't get bored. Just pick a place, the best that suits you and have an unforgettable night.
I just have one piece of advise: put attention to your personal stuff, because it is a very, very popular place, thieves are eager for tourists' cameras and cellphones.

Best neighborhood to listen to Samba de Raiz in Rio. Many bars located side-by-side. Carioca da Gema is one of the most traditional ones.

Full of people everywhere, starts around 21 but gets really crowded at 2am. Lots of people selling caipirinhas in the street, carne a la parrilla. Bars are expensive but let's you find a place to sit. This place is for all kind of budgets. Just be careful as they say they steal a lot. I went three times and didn't have issues though.

we were at the nearby cathedral and stopped by to see the arches, they are nice but there's not much to do after taking a few pics. I imagine there is an interesting story behind them but we had no tourist guide and didn't look online for info before getting there so maybe we missed out a bit on it's value?!

The Arcos are huge and unexpected. I got some really nice shots with shadows since the sun was setting. We were walking and felt safe the entire time. My friend and her husband recommend the night life.

Nightlife is amazing here. Recommend checking out the street parties on the Friday and Saturday if that's your thing. Heaps of cafés, restaurants and bars scattered throughout the streets. If the nightclub scene is not your thing, it's still a great place for dinner and even during the day. The arches and also the tiled steps are also a must see if you come here.
